Rebecca Skloot's 2010 non-fiction book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, an African American woman whose cervical cancer cells became the first immortal human cell line in 1951. The cells, known as HeLa, were taken without Lacks' knowledge or consent and have been used in research for cancer, the polio vaccine, and the human genome.
